A chemical peel is a skin-resurfacing treatment that uses a topical acid to exfoliate the skin in a controlled way. This process encourages new skin growth and faster cell turnover, helping skin look smoother and feel refreshed—often after the first treatment.
Chemical peels may help improve the appearance of:
Acne scarring
Sun-damaged skin
Age spots and freckles
Fine lines
Rough texture
Uneven pigmentation / uneven tone
Chemical peels can be performed on several areas, depending on your needs—including the face, neck, chest, hands, arms, shoulders, and legs.
Chemical peels are commonly grouped into three categories:
Superficial peels (lighter exfoliation for surface-level concerns)
Medium peels (stronger acids for more noticeable improvement)
Deep peels (the most intensive option, directed at the dermis for deeper wrinkles/scars and significant damage)
Your provider will recommend the right depth based on your skin and goals.
Superficial and medium peels typically have a prompt recovery and many patients can return to normal daily activities immediately. Mild or negligible flaking may occur. Consistent sun protection is strongly recommended to maintain results.
Deep peels can involve more downtime and a stronger post-treatment response. Patients may experience redness, swelling, and blistering. Skin may turn brown before peeling begins, and crusting can occur. Peeling may become apparent around 1–2 weeks, and the area may feel like a severe sunburn as skin heals. Normal skin tone returns gradually over time. In some cases, anesthesia may be necessary due to the hot stinging sensation during treatment.
For all peel depths, sun protection is essential to protect healing skin and help maintain results. Your provider may also recommend specific skincare products to support recovery and extend the benefits of your peel.
